Google Earth -In this activity you will be watching a Tour from Google Earth to lean what divergent plate boundaries, convergent plate boundaries, volcanoes, and island chains look like from a satellite image and where they are located on Earth.
Assignment-
1. Watch the Tour and read about features A-E.
2. Answer the questions for F-I along with the tour.
3. Lastly explore Google Earth to see if you can find others not used in the tour.
GOOD LUCK!

Notes While Watching
A. This is an example of a Divergent Plate boundary. Notice the spreading ridge down the center.
B. This is an example of a Convergent Plate Boundary. This is between two continental plates. Notice the large mountain range that was created by the collision.
C. This is also an example of a Convergent Plate Boundary; however, this is between an oceanic and continental plate. Notice the deep trench where one plate is being subducted under the other.
D. This is an exmple of a volcano. Notice the large circular caldera visable at the top of the mountain.
E. This is an example of an Island Chain caused by a hot spot. Notice the linear path the islands make.

Questions
F. What is this?
What features did you used to help you identify it?

G. What is this?
What features did you used to help you identify it?

H. What is this?
What features did you used to help you identify it?

I. What is this?
What features did you used to help you identify it?

What other interesting things did you find on your own? What are some features you recognized?

Answers
F. Divergent Plate Boundary, Divergent spreading ridge.
G. Volcano, large caldera, lava flows.
H. Convergent Plate Boundary, deep trench and mountains.
I . Island Chain, linear chain of island surrounded by water.

I loved learning to use Google Earth! It took me forever to try to figure out how to export my tour. I have other things to go with it the tour that did not get exported. I think it would work better if we did it as a class on a projector rather than by them selves. Overall positive experience and I would use it for sure in my future class room.

Last Assignment

In this class, I have use and learned a lot about different types of technology. First I have used technology to contribute to some domain of knowledge by adding a video how to balance equations on Youtube. It is cool to know that people all around the world can look at that video and get help if they need to.

Another way I use technology almost every day is to collaborate with classmates. Especially now during spring semester I’m in five classes and lots of them have group work. It is really hard for us to figure out a time that works well for us to meet so we can do it virtually. Google Doc’s have been a life saver this term. The flexibility of being able to check and add when was convenient for me was wonderful.

In this class we looked at a lot of different ways to use technology in the classroom. Some examples we talked about and I think are good ideas were the class website, and class blog. But I think for my specific area of teaching technology is becoming so much more important because it brings science to the classroom. Technology has the ability to make science that was too big or too small in the classroom fit by computer programs and simulations.

The biggest thing I leaned in this class is that Google is taking over the world. From google docs, wave, blogger, sites, search, and we did not even use all thing different things all they have to offer. But really there is so much technology available to teachers that I had no idea was out there. It is good to be exposed to all the new technology. I want to know how to use technology so it becomes helpful and not a hindrance to teaching.

One thing that I am going to continue for sure is blogging. My husband keeps encouraging me to keep one for our family. It also helped me learned how to learn technology. I have spent a lot of time watching youtube videos to help with everything. My ability to learn technology has increased dramatically.

Software Tools

Most of the things I found on line to help with my teaching were virtual labs. I think it will be a good help in my classroom. Some of the benefits of a virtual labs include the students can access the lab from anywhere that has a computer and not constricted to the lab. It also gives the student more options that would be restricted due to safety. All fires, spills, hazardous waste, can be fixed with the click of a mouse. Some of the draw backs, it’s not a real lab. It can sometimes be too planned. Here is an example of a virtual lab I found. http://highered.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/0073031208/student_view0/virtual_labs.html
Internet safety is important. I have gotten my email hacked and lots of spam emails sent to all my contacts, not cool. It is also important to keep your information safe. There are many issues with people trying to use your identity.

Awesome Movie!

So here is my awesome movie. It is a little extra help for balancing equations. Yay! You can also find it on you tube with this link

Video Chat

I used Skype for my video chat. It was fun I just chatted with one of my friends from the Riviera. I like how you can see the person's expressions. I like how there is a little picture of you in the corner and you can see yourself. I feel awkward on the screen especially at first. I have used it before but I don't have any good friends or family that live far away that make it worth while. I think it could be used in the classroom if you had like a sister school or something, but I wouldn't use it for everyday instruction. I haven't fallen for it yet.
Oh and my movie is done and awesome!

Video Plan

For my video I am going to teach how to a balance chemical equations. This is an important chemistry concept and conservation of matter idea. There is a large gap between the students who can pick it up super fast and then can balance equations in their sleep and those who really struggle. I am going to make a video for those who struggle so they can have extra help and extra practice. It will also create another teaching method rather than me just showing it on the board. I have looked at some good ideas at how to present it. I plan on using the i-movie on the macs. The thing I think I am going to have trouble with is finding a sound that goes well with balancing equations. Hmmmm. But other than that I haven't run into any other issuers. I have spent over an hour storyboarding and finding material but I haven’t started on the actual movie yet. I’m excited; all is going well so far.

My Class Website

I had a lot of fun learning how to do everything for the site. I now have a new found respect for programmers. Here is my website I created for my future class. It's not perfect but it has potential. Check it out!

Class website

I've been thinking about enhancing education with technology. I think an website would be a convenient way for the parents to get involved. It would be nice to post instructions for major projects and their due dates. This is so the parents would know exactly is going on. Along with that have a master calender that shows when all the major projects are due. I think it is important to make the parents feel like they are involved with their students education as much as possible. It would also be cool to spot light some of the accomplishments of the students as well. Possibly posting some pictures etc. I think a website could be very informative and beneficial.

Blogs and RSS Feeds

I think blogs would be great for having a way that students and their parents can access information about that class anytime. I would put important documents or assignments that the students and parents could access. I think it would also be fun to post any cool activates we did in class for the parents to see and get excited about. Also I think it would be great to help the parents feel more involved with their students learning.

Some of the RSS feeds that I thought would be cool to use in the classroom is first an RSS feed that tells all the recent earthquakes around the world that are larger than a 5.0 in magnitude. This would be fun to have the students connect what they learned in class to the real world. It would also be cool to look at the location of the earthquake and determine what type it was. Also I subscribed to the NASA earth observatory image of the day. That is just to have fun looking at awesome high resolutions images. Lastly I subscribe to some self help RSS feeds to better manage my time and become a better teacher.

First Post!

This is my first post for my new IP&T blog! Yay!
